On July 7, 1966, the Animals played the Municipal Coliseum in Lubbock, Texas, supporting the headliners Herman's Hermits -- then at their American peak -- on a package tour. It was, though not billed as such, the last American summer of the original Animals: Eric Burdon, Hilton Valentine, Barry Jenkins, Chas Chandler and the rest had privately decided to split, and by that autumn the group was gone, Burdon soon reassembling a new lineup as Eric Burdon and the Animals.
