Jefferson Airplane and the Wild West benefit

The same night, at the Fillmore West, Jefferson Airplane headlined a benefit for the Wild West Festival -- a planned free-and-paid hybrid for Golden Gate Park that August, ultimately canceled amid disputes over whether it should charge admission at all. On the bill were the all-woman Haight-Ashbury band Ace of Cups -- admired by Hendrix, soon to sing on the Airplane's Volunteers, and who would not release a debut album until 2018, some fifty years later -- along with the jazz-fusion group the Fourth Way and the local band Phoenix.
