Michael Ferguson

Biography

Michael (Mike) Ferguson (birth date not documented; died 1979) was the pianist and an original member of The Charlatans, formed in San Francisco in mid-1964. Beyond his keyboard role, Ferguson was a skilled visual artist, and in June 1965 he co-designed the poster for the band's Red Dog Saloon residency in Virginia City, Nevada — "The Seed" — with founder George Hunter. Sources credit Ferguson with much of the poster's detailed artwork, including drawn band portraits, executed in an antique, hand-lettered, nineteenth-century-handbill style. Because he was already making such work in 1965, he is counted among the very earliest psychedelic poster makers. After the Charlatans he performed with Lynne Hughes in the band Tongue and Groove. He died in 1979 of complications from diabetes.

Why They Matter

Ferguson's significance is twofold: as a charter member of The Charlatans — often cited as the first San Francisco psychedelic band — and as one of the earliest psychedelic poster artists. His hand on "The Seed," particularly its detailed drawing and band portraiture, helped define the antique, ornately lettered look that became a hallmark of the genre. Because the poster was made in 1965, ahead of the Family Dog and Fillmore series, Ferguson belongs to the small founding cohort of the form.
